Rent Tax Credit 2024: Claim Up To €1,000

What Changed in 2024?

Budget 2024 doubled the Rent Tax Credit amounts:

• Single people: €500 → €1,000 (doubled)
• Couples: €1,000 → €2,000 (doubled)
• Same eligibility criteria as previous years
• Can still be claimed alongside backdated 2022/2023 credits

Who Can Claim the 2024 Credit?

You're eligible if you:

• Paid rent for a property in Ireland during 2024
• The property was your main residence
• You didn't receive HAP, RAS, or Rent Supplement in 2024
• You weren't renting from a family member
• You paid income tax in Ireland during 2024

When Can I Claim for 2024?

You can claim your 2024 Rent Tax Credit:

• During 2024: Through your tax credits certificate (real-time)
• After 2024: When you complete your annual tax return
• Deadline: You have 4 years to claim (until end of 2028)

How to Claim Your 2024 Credit

1. Log into Revenue myAccount
2. Go to "Review your tax" → Select 2024
3. Click "Complete your Income Tax Return"
4. Navigate to Tax Credits → "You and Your Family" → Rent Tax Credit
5. Enter your monthly rent and landlord details
6. Submit your return
7. Receive your refund within 5-10 working days

How Much Will I Get Back?

The credit is the lesser of:

• €1,000 (single) or €2,000 (couple), OR
• The total rent you paid during 2024

For example, if you paid €1,500/month in rent during 2024, you'll get the full €1,000 credit (single) or €2,000 (couple) since your annual rent exceeds the maximum.
