In This Guide:
What is the Rent Tax Credit?
The Rent Tax Credit is a tax relief introduced by the Irish government to help private renters with the cost of renting. It allows you to claim back a portion of the income tax you've paid, reducing your overall tax bill.
The credit was introduced in Budget 2023 and has been extended through to 2025. You can also backdate claims to 2022, meaning you could claim up to 4 years of credits if you've been renting since then.
Who is Eligible for Rent Tax Credit?
To claim the Rent Tax Credit, you must:
- Pay rent for a property in Ireland that is your principal private residence
- Not be receiving Housing Assistance Payment (HAP), Rent Supplement, or RAS
- Not be renting from a family member (parent, child, sibling, etc.)
- Not be renting a property you have an ownership interest in
- Be paying income tax in Ireland (PAYE or self-assessed)
Note: Your tenancy does NOT need to be registered with the RTB to claim. While landlords should register, Revenue allows claims even without RTB registration.
