5 Common Mistakes When Claiming Rent Tax Credit

Avoid these costly errors that could delay your refund or reduce how much you get back. Learn from others' mistakes and maximize your claim.

1

Not Claiming for All Eligible Years

Many people only claim for the current year, missing out on backdated credits.

The fix:

You can claim back to 2022. If you've been renting since then, you could be missing out on up to €3,000 (single) or €6,000 (couple). Go through each year: 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025.

2

Claiming While Receiving HAP or Other Housing Support

Some people try to claim Rent Tax Credit while on HAP, Rent Supplement, or RAS. This can lead to your claim being rejected or having to repay the credit.

The fix:

If you receive ANY housing assistance from the government, you cannot claim Rent Tax Credit for that period. Only claim for periods when you were paying full rent without support.

3

Entering the Wrong Rent Amount

Entering your total annual rent instead of monthly rent (or vice versa) can mess up your claim or raise red flags with Revenue.

The fix:

Double-check what Revenue is asking for. Usually it's your monthly rent. Use your bank statements to verify the exact amount you pay each month.

4

Thinking You Need RTB Registration to Claim

Some renters don't claim because their landlord isn't registered with the RTB. This is wrong — you can still claim!

The fix:

RTB registration is NOT required to claim Rent Tax Credit. Just select "I don't know" for the RTB number if you don't have it. Keep your rent payment records as backup proof.

5

Couples Not Maximizing Their Combined Claim

Couples sometimes only claim as a single person, or don't realize they can claim double the amount when jointly assessed.

The fix:

If you're married or in a civil partnership and jointly assessed, you can claim up to €2,000 per year (2024/2025). Make sure to select the correct filing status and claim the couple rate.

Bonus Tips for a Smooth Claim

  • Keep records for 6 years — Revenue can ask for proof at any time
  • Claim each year separately — Submit a return for each tax year
  • Check your bank details — Make sure Revenue has your correct account for refunds
  • If you moved mid-year — Claim for each property separately with correct dates
